Sand Play Therapy A powerful tool for adults and children It’s often said that one picture is worth a thousand words. Sand play therapy is like painting a three dimensional picture using figurines. One of many ways this can be done is by picking figures that draw our attention, without censoring, and then placing them in the sand. Bit by bit a picture begins to unfold. We can also use figurines to represent the way something was, currently is, or how we would like it to be in the future. Sand play therapy, like other expressive art therapies (collage, drawing, etc.) enable us to more easily access the right side, or emotional part of our brain, ultimately making it easier to express things we previously weren’t conscious of. It's not unusual for us to easily see other people’s problems, while having difficulty identifying our own. By externalizing our experience through creating a picture with the figurines, it becomes easier to have a more objective perspective. |
