Expressive Art Therapy Expressive art therapy accesses the right or creative side of our brain. The right side of the brain is also where our emotions are stored. By allowing yourself to begin a piece of art, without censoring and just seeing what emerges, it often becomes an window to your true inner feelings. This can be done with techniques such as drawing, collage, writing music, journal writing, etc. Using the non-dominant hand to write or draw, helps bypass your protective, rational, censoring mind. Writing words on a rock such as "power", "love", etc., can become a reminder of a particular feeling or emotion you want to return to. When words fail us, expressive art therapy will usually give us an alternative way in. |
